RESIDENTS in a Warminster street are fighting back at speeding motorists who regularly use their road as a race track. Campaigners claim police cameras have regularly recorded cars hurtling down Victoria Road at speeds topping 60mph.
Over 30 householders met on Wednesday night to raise their concerns and are calling for highways chiefs to take action.
Traffic chiefs at the Wiltshire and Swindon Safety Camera Partnership have told the group no further speed checks can be put in place until April because the road is not a priority.
Resident Peter Merriman said: "Police identified systematic speeding within the road with 75 per cent ignoring the limit and a number of users travelling at more than twice the limit.
"I calculated that if those had been stopped and fined in one week alone the fines levied would have been over £800,000."
A spokesman for the Safety Camera Partnership said: "We are aware of residents' concerns but Victoria Road is too narrow and crowded to park a van to carry out speed checks.
"Our records show there has been no fatal accident on Victoria Road in the last three years but in April we will be using a motorbike to fine speeding drivers."
