CARERS are to get better help and support in Wiltshire, thanks to a 25 per cent increase in government funding. The Wiltshire Carers Grant, managed by Wiltshire County Council, has been increased by to £859,000 for 2004-05.
The grant aims to allow those who care for others in their own homes the chance to have a break. This can take the form of helping with the cost of a holiday or providing extra support for the person they are caring for.
Cllr Judy Seager, cabinet member for adult and community services, said: "I am delighted that the carers grant has increased by such a substantial amount.
"Carers in Wiltshire do a wonderful job which is largely unrecognised they are the county's unsung heroes and they deserve as much help and support as we can give them.
"The grant can help to provide opportunities for these dedicated people to have a break from being a carer. Just a few days or hours away can be invaluable for carers and give them a rest."
