THE mother of a four-year-old girl who plunged 20ft after falling out of her brother's bedroom window has welcomed an investigation into a faulty window clasp at the Trowbridge house.
Jackie-Danielle Velvick suffered fatal head injuries after falling two storeys onto a concrete path at her home in Longfield Road three days before Christmas.
An inquest held at Flax Bourton Coroner's Court in Bristol heard part of the window catch was broken, meaning it could be pushed open at any time.
Bosses at West Wiltshire Housing Society, which owns the property, said their sympathies were with Jackie-Danielle's family and vowed to investigate the incident fully.
Spokesman Ellie Phillips said the society was unaware of the fault.
Coroner Paul Forrest, who recorded a verdict of accidental death, described the schoolgirl's death as tragic and urged the housing association to conduct a thorough investigation.
Mother Cher Velvick, 28, said she welcomed any inquiry. "I didn't even know the catch had broken. I certainly would not want this to happen to anyone else so any investigation would be brilliant," she said.
In a statement read to the inquest on Thursday, Miss Velvick said her daughter was an adventurous child with "no fear", and that one of her favourite habits was climbing on window ledges to see what was going on outside.
Jackie-Danielle died at Bristol Children's Hospital on December 29, seven days after the fall.
Pathologists Dr Margaret Evans and Professor Seth Love said she died as a result of extensive cerebral trauma, caused by the fall.
Det Con Tim Carnohan, who conducted the police inquiry, said Jackie-Danielle had been playing hide-and-seek.
Jackie-Danielle's funeral will be held at St James' Church, Trowbridge, later today. Her coffin will leave her former home in Longfield Road at 1.40am. The service starts at 2pm and a wake afterwards will be held at Longfield Community Centre.
