JOHN FISHER has finally admitted that his Highworth side will not win the Hellenic Premier Division this season but he thinks he knows who will.

A 2-0 home defeat by Southall on Saturday left Highworth's title dreams in tatters and prompted Fisher to tip the triumphant visitors for the crown.

Goals from Gavin Hart and Ashley Keane either side of half-time forced the Highworth boss to throw in the towel.

Without a win in five, Fisher's men are now 13 points behind top two Didcot and Southall.

"It's gone," conceded Fisher.

"Our confidence is shot to pieces and the players don't want the ball because they're frightened of making a mistake. When that starts happening you've got no chance.

"We've lost players through injury and suspension but that happens to everyone so we can't use that as an excuse.

"We won't win the league now that's for sure but can still dictate who will win it.

"Southall are the best side we have faced this season and my money would certainly be on them.

"Their movement was excellent and they've got some very good players."

Fisher has been urged to freshen things up with a couple of new signings prior to the transfer deadline but he plans to keep faith in his current crop of players.

"I won't be looking to bring in any new faces at this stage, with the league gone there's no point," he said.

"The players have been loyal to me all season and I will be loyal to them."

Wootton Bassett were beaten by Pewsey Vale for the third time this season.

Pete Yeardley's side lost 1-0 at the Rec, adding to defeats suffered in the reverse fixture and the Wilts Senior Cup. The loss sees Bassett slip to second-from bottom in the Premier Division with Pewsey now a place above them.

Barry Flippance scored the only goal of the game, sliding in a low Craig Wall cross on 36 minutes past debutant keeper Ian Gill.

Bassett's misery was compounded by Mark Vaughan's dismissal for two dubious bookings.

Fairford were 1-0 winners at Carterton thanks to Carl Marsh's goal.

Purton booked their place in the semi-final of the Cherry Red Records Challenge Cup with a 1-0 win over Prestwood.

Eurshel Fearon settled the game with a close-range header after half an hour.

Purton manager Alan Clark said: "We should have won by more really.

"One-nil wasn't a true reflection of the game we had three or four more very good chances.

"But we got the win without playing well and that's the important thing."

Clark's side will now face Bishops Cleeve in a two-legged semi, with the winner facing Didcot or Hungerford in the final.

In Division One West, Cirencester United beat Quarry Nomads 1-0.

Malmesbury Vics and Shrivenham had the weekend off.
