CHIPPENHAM TOWN'S dynamic duo have fired the Bluebirds into the Conference Two play-off places.

Prolific pairing James Constable and Charlie Griffin scored a goal apiece to hand their side a 2-0 win at Grantham and pull them out of the bottom four for the first time since early October.

The strike duo have bagged 19 between them since they were united in the New Year and the latest in the collection handed Steve White's men a deserved away victory.

A lengthy hail storm threatened the match ahead of kick-off but as the conditions eased Town settled well.

Griffin fired an early warning shot against a post after just six minutes and headed against the woodwork again on 14.

The breakthrough arrived on 24 minutes when Grantham's Jamie Kearns lost possession, Griffin's shot was well saved by Mario Ziccardi and Constable stabbed home the rebound.

The hosts enjoyed more of the ball after the break but rarely threatened as Chippenham doubled their lead on 65 minutes.

Wayne Thorne's long throughball sent Griffin clear and the former Swindon striker fired under the body of Ziccardi.

Substitute Martin Paul twice went close to extending the lead before Thorne's superb goal-line clearance from Mark Wilson earned Chippenham a rare clean sheet.

The only blemish on Town's day was a hamstring injury to the returning Mark Badman, forcing the midfielder off before half-time.

CHIPPENHAM: Hervin, Green, Walker, Thorne, Gould, Charity, Horgan, Badman, Griffin, Constable, Herring.

Subs: Allison, Paul, Robertson, Towler, Wilmot.

SEVERAL of Chippenham's fellow strugglers also picked up points at the weekend, but it was not enough to prevent the Bluebirds climbing to 17th in the Premier Division.

Bath triumphed 2-1 at Hinckley to prolong their hopes of escaping the bottom four and Havant arrested their dramatic slide with a 4-2 win over Merthyr.

At the other end of the table, more than 4,500 fans saw Crawley beat Steve Claridge's Weymouth 2-1 to take over top spot from the big-spending south coast side.
