PLANS for a £1.4 million skateboard, BMX and in line skate park at Pewsey are moving forward despite difficulties in obtaining funding.

Businessman Mike Dymond, who is helping the youngsters with their scheme, told the Gazette this week: "We are still going ahead with our plans but we are struggling to find the funding."

To raise awareness, the project is opening its facilities to all comers on April 24 with bands and DJs performing in the Shak throughout the afternoon and evening

Mr Dymond said it was hoped to have displays by professional skaters and bikers with open competitions for all comers to take part in.

The idea was launched at the beginning of last year by the Pewsey Platform Skateboard And BMX Bikers Club, part of the Shak Youth Development Centre.

Members have created an outdoor skating and BMX centre using an adjacent school's floodlit tennis courts and just over a year ago they launched plans for an indoor skate and BMX park behind the Shak in Wilcot Road.

The proposals also include other activities including a climbing wall, dance and visual arts studio, music and drama performance facilities together with a caf and shop.

A steering group was set up and the youngsters met representatives of the three local authorities, Pewsey Parish Council, Kennet and Wiltshire County Council who have all voiced support for the idea.
