STRIKER Charlie Griffin won't say what his goals target for the season is but he says he is making good progress towards it.

The former Swindon and Woking forward bagged his 17th goal of the campaign at Grantham, and might have had a hat-trick if it wasn't for the woodwork.

"I went through and got in a good shot but it came off the post, and then I had a header and that came back off the post too,'' he said.

"I wasn't worried though. The gaffer has kept telling me to forget about it and keep going and the goals will come and he was right.''

Boss Steve White is delighted with his forward's contribution as the Bluebirds aim to cling on to their play-off place.

He said: "Charlie and all the forwards are contributing goals which is great, their output has been fantastic. Charlie has 17 goals, James Constable has 11 and Martin Paul has got five so they are doing well.

"I've told Charlie that it's not about missing chances, it is hitting the target and he's been doing that.''

Griffin is just relieved to be playing back in the penalty area after starting the season playing wide right.

"I hated it out there and I wasn't enjoying my football. Now I am loving it again. I've got 17 goals and there are still nine games to go so who knows what I'll finish on. I have a target that I set myself but I never tell anyone what it is. I'm doing quite nicely though.

"The gaffer has seen and done it all in football and everything he can pass on is a bonus.

"His advice about movement and positional play has been a real help. Before I wasn't getting in the right positions but now I am in the right place and getting the goals,'' he said.

He also paid tribute to the part played by assistant boss Ron Needham. A few eyebrows were raised when he joined White at Hardenhuish Park because his only previous experience of coaching had been at youth level.

But Griffin says he has made a huge difference. "He came in and really got to know the players and he has been great ever since because he is always there encouraging you.

"He notices little things about your game and suggest things to improve it. He is also a great motivator and has given me a lift,'' he said.

Griffin felt Chippenham were convincing winners on Saturday. "We set out our stall and took control and we were the better side from start to finish.

"We should have beaten them at home so we were really pleased to get a nice three points and it sets us up nicely for the run-in to the end of the season,'' he said.

Despite Crawley's fearsome reputation Griffin is convinced they are there for the beating.

"They are a good side but we pushed them close up at their place when we lost 3-2 with ten men. On our day we can beat anyone in this league and the last two wins have given us real confidence. We are on a little run now.

"There'll be a great atmosphere on Saturday and we'll certainly be up for it.''
