GAZETTE & HERALD: North Wiltshire District Council has set aside £650,000 towards tackling the subsidence of land near homes in Churchill Close, Calne.

Council leader Coun Ruth Coleman said there was a possibility repairs could be undertaken.

"I don't want to raise hopes too soon but we have asked Halcrows to come back with detailed plans on how and when we can implement a solution that will work," she said.

Civil engineers Halcrows undertook an investigation in January to find out what was causing the gardens of homes to subside.

Residents in Churchill Close have lost between five and ten feet from their gardens, that back onto land owned by the district council.

Coun Coleman said the council was still awaiting word from its insurers about the balance of costs and needed to discuss the matter with them.

However, the district council is not accepting liability at this stage.
