CLOSE friends and rugby fanatics Rhian Maxwell and Danny Williams were treated to a dream day at a rugby international match thanks to Rhian's knowledge of the game.

Rhian and Danny, both sixth formers at St John's School in Marlborough, were given celebrity seats for the Scotland-England match at Murrayfield.

After the game they were invited to a champagne reception at the National Museum of Scotland, where they were introduced to the players from both teams.

Rhian, 18, from Pewsey, and Danny, 17, from West Overton, are both Bath fans and get to as many matches as they can.

They were thrilled to be able to meet two of their Bath heroes, Danny Grewcock and Ian Balshaw, who had helped the England side to their 35-13 victory over Scotland.

The Calcutta Cup game was a 67,500 sell out for weeks before.

The St John's students, however, were given free tickets after Rhian won them in a Radio 1 general knowledge quiz on the Jo Whiley show.

She was the highest scorer in the quiz on Wednesday, which meant she had to take part in a final play-off on the Friday.

The last question which decided the winner could not have been better if Rhian had chosen it herself: What is the capacity of Murrayfield?

Her correct reply won the day out for two at the Calcutta Cup game.

It was the first international either had attended.

Rhian, whose father Andy is rugby teacher at St John's School, said: "We went to the match and to a champagne reception where we met all the players and got a signed shirt."

Danny plays for the St John's 1st XV. He said: "We are both big Bath fans and it was really great to meet some of the players afterwards at the reception."

The only drawback for the pair was that the BBC left them to pay their own train fares from Wiltshire to Edinburgh.
