VILLAINOUS characters are needed to take part in re-enactments of trials that took place in Marlborough in the 19th century.

The trials will be the culmination of the town play, Wheels of Time, that will be one of the highlights of the celebrations in June of the 800th anniversary of Marlborough receiving its royal charters from King John.

All the principal roles in the play have been assigned but, said director and producer David Sherratt, a number of non-speaking roles remain unfilled.

Mr Sherratt is hoping that sufficient volunteers come forward by or at the first rehearsal that will be held on March 28, at 2.30pm in Marlborough Town Hall.

The vacant roles include four Norman soldiers, four Cavaliers, four Roundheads, the Duke of Buckingham, four male players, 30 fire runners (must be over 12), eight burgesses, one 18-year-old male thief, one 12-year-old girl thief, one 17-year-old carnalist, and one 21-year-old burglar.

The four villains will be tried before a judge at Quarter Sessions.

Although the charges might appear to be minor the sentences will be very severe and could include deportation.

Anyone who is interested in a part can leave details with the civic secretary Jonathan Mansfield at the town council offices, 5 High Street (01672) 512487.
