HAVING looked at the photo of platform four of Swindon station what a transformation.

I can remember when it was a fish dock. All Swindon's fish was loaded onto same, most of the fishmongers was Quality Ltd Wallis & Archers.

I worked on Swindon station for 25 years on this platform sorting out the fish boxes.

When Dr Beeching came along he made the fish companies from Hull and Grimsby pay for the return of the empty trucks. They refused and that was the end of fish trains.

Platform four stood empty for some years.

By day it became a post office supply depot for WH Smith's Book Club. Thousands of bags were loaded into trucks, also some letter bags in other trucks. At night, it became a parcel sorting platform for the parcel office for delivery next day.

Unbelievable what it has come to these days.

Marvellous.
