GIANT cigarettes were out and about in Warminster this week as part of national No Smoking Day. Sports and Leisure workers were dressed up as part of the day, which this year had the theme 'for smokers who want out'.
At ASDA in Trowbridge, staff also took up the no smoking banner, offering to measure the carbon monoxide levels of smokers and giving out literature aimed at inspiring them to quit.
A spokesman from the West Wiltshire NHS primary care trust's Support to Stop team said: "Twenty four per cent of adults in the south west are smoking regularly and research has shown that over two thirds of them would like to stop.
"'For smokers who want out' perfectly sums up what the majority of smokers want they want out of the mess, the addiction, the smell, the expense and the social stigma associated with smoking."
Ben Youdan, campaign director of the charity No Smoking Day, which organises the annual event, said: "More than one million smokers will have made an attempt on the day itself and are taking advantage of all the extra support available. That's a phenomenal number of people uniting to show that they really do want out of smoking."
