A PROPOSAL to demolish parts of an antiques warehouse in Warminster and replace it with houses has been approved.

Warminster Town Council planning and advisory committee raised no objections to development of the K & A Welch site, in Church Street, on Monday.

The plan to build five homes was withdrawn earlier this year after opposition from local residents but a revised plan, including improved access and lower buildings, has been recommended.

Co-owner Alan Welch said: "It is not a very pretty shop and we don't want any more semi-opened businesses in Warminster. I think this development is good for the town."

The family-run antiques shop has been in business for 50 years but partners Ken and Alan Welch have decided to retire.

Councillors have also instructed developers to pay a contribution for improving road safety at the obelisk junction. The scheme will now go to West Wiltshire District Council for consideration.
