ORGANISERS of the Bradford in Bloom competition are revamping it this year with a groovier name to encourage more youngsters to take part.
Committee members in Bradford on Avon have opted for the lighter title of Bloomin' Bradford for the annual contest to prove it is not just reserved for the die-hard gardening buffs of the town.
But Bradford youth development coordinator Michelle Meacher says giving the event a funkier name won't necessarily persuade them to take part.
She said: "I think it is how the competition is packaged that matters with attracting young people.
"Having said that the young people at the youth club have been making bird and bat boxes in recent months so they are quite switched on about conservation and the environment and I think doing something garden- based is something they might like to get involved in."
The structure of the competition, which takes place in July, will stay the same, with domestic and commercial categories, but will include new categories such as best garden display by under 18s and best school/club garden by students/young people.
Town councillor Philip Sutton, of the organising committee, said: "We are aiming for a fun event with the emphasis on joining in and giving pleasure to neighbours and visitors. If people want to show-off a bit that is great too.
"Everyone from five to 95 can get involved and nobody is so busy or lacking in green fingers that they can't plant a window-box. You don't have to reach Chelsea standards to have a go."
As part of the new-look competition organisers are planning a celebratory tea after the judging for all entrants.
