THE BIG OUTDOORS: YOULBURY is the oldest permanent Scout campsite in the world. The 42-acre site set in secluded woodland was formed in 1913 just six years after the scouting movement began.
The campsite already has three basic indoor accommodation blocks in addition to camping facilities.
Each has a number of rooms with bunk beds, fully equipped kitchens and a hall, as well as radiator heating and a toilet. Under plans which are still being considered, these would be up-graded to modern facilities.
Builders could move to the site in two years. A final decision is expected in six months.
John Fog, director of communications for the Scout Association, stressed that camping would still be available for youngsters.
He said: "We have done a lot of research and the clear message is that young people like camping.
"We are confident that we will create a balance between the B&B style and tented accommodation.
"The modern blocks will be especially useful for school trips."
