THIRTY firefighters including several from Swindon were called to a blaze at a petrol station yesterday.

Residents had to be evacuated from their homes after a collision between two cars led to a fire at the Murco petrol station at Fyfield, near Marlborough, on the A4 at 4pm.

A Vauxhall Astra van and an Audi collided sending one of the vehicles into one of the pumps.

Fire consumed both cars, a motorbike and a storeroom but no one was injured. Around eight fire engines were involved in fighting the incident, including vehicles carrying powerful water jets, which were used to cool down butane gas bottles stored at the filling station.

Traffic on the A4 had to be diverted around through Marlborough and Beckhampton.

Firefighters said the blaze was under control by 5pm.
