The lure of a free swim was not enough to tempt teenagers to hand over their cigarettes to mark No Smoking Day.
Only one boy took up the offer to swap five cigarettes for a leisure voucher at Dorcan Recreation Complex as part of a smoking amnesty for children aged 12 to 16.
But Swindon Council and the town's Primary Care Trust (PCT) declared the No Smoking Day efforts to be a success.
Devon Brown, 16, of Dorcan Technology College, handed over five cigarettes in exchange for a £2.90 swimming voucher.
He said: "Giving up is hard to do but the amnesty scheme encourages people to get fit as well as cutting down on smoking. I think it's a good idea."
Swindon Council spokesman Gavin Calthrop said the council was disappointed at the take-up but said it had promoted No Smoking Day.
Karen Shirley, Swindon PCT's tobacco control co-ordinator, said people manning a stand in the Brunel Centre spoke to 100 people on Wednesday, of whom 35 wanted to quit. Awareness sessions for teenagers at Penhill Community Centre and the Clivey Project, in Pinehurst were also a success.
