The Evening Advertiser has reported extensively on domestic violence recently from the effect on predominantly female victims, to the need for funds for the women's refuge, and the impact on children.
Violence against women is a fundamental abuse of women's human rights and the scale of the problem is phenomenal.
Last Friday, Amnesty International launched a two-year campaign Stop Violence Against Women.
The facts are truly frightening. At least one woman in every three in the world will be beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime.
Here in Britain, the emergency services receive an average of one call per minute about violence in the family.
Our message is simple, violence against women is never acceptable, whether in the home or on the street, in the UK or overseas, whether during peace or wartime.
We want to help eradicate it.
