Motorists were once again forced to brave icy conditions as another flurry of snow hit Swindon.

And some, like the car in our picture that smashed into a telephone box at Salthrop, near Wootton Bassett, came a cropper in the slush.

All Swindon schools were open as usual, although St John's School, in Marlborough, closed due to the bad weather.

An answerphone message at the school states: "The school will be closed today because of the adverse weather conditions which have particularly affected some of the outlying areas."

Police at Westlea traffic department reported a quiet morning yesterday, suggesting most drivers had heeded weather warnings issued by Wiltshire Constabulary.

PC Chris Silvanus, from the traffic department, said: "There haven't been many incidents and it looks like we have escaped quite lightly.

"Gloucestershire got hit worse than us, but by mid-morning it had seemed to warm up a bit which helped the roads here.

"I think most people have been driving extra carefully. It's a shame they can't do that all the time."

In one of the few accidents that did occur a man was taken to hospital after his Mercedes Sprinter van appeared to skid out of control at 6am yesterday.

He suffered minor head injuries and shock following the incident, at Nell Hill, near Hannington.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident but believe it was down to the wintry conditions.

AA Roadwatch also reported a quiet Friday. A spokesman said: "The roads have not been too bad at all. It looks like most people either avoided using their cars in these conditions, or else gave themselves extra time to get to places."

The forecast for the weekend promises warmer weather, with temperatures expected to reach 10 degrees today and 12 degrees tomorrow.
