COUNCILLORS are set to ignore a request to introduce traffic lights at the junction of County Road and Manchester Road.

Swindon Council's cabinet will meet on Wednesday, and discuss a request made by one of the council's area panels in July.

This asked for traffic lights to be brought in so that traffic coming from Gorse Hill towards the County Ground that wanted to turn into Manchester Road would not have to go up to the Magic Roundabout to turn round.

There were lights at the junction up to 1994, when the current layout was brought in.

At the moment right turns are banned there except for buses.

But council officers have researched the proposed plan and have found it would cost about £70,000 to carry out the work.

They also believe the current layout is the best because it makes buses more efficient, and also reduces traffic in Manchester Road, which was previously used by drivers headed for the town centre.

Because of the ban on right turns, town centre traffic now heads to the Magic Roundabout and then goes along Fleming Way.

The cabinet meets at 6pm in the Civic Offices in Euclid Street. The meeting is open to the public.
