SAMMY IGOE'S battered and bruised right ankle threatens to leave him sidelined for Grimsby Town's visit to the County Ground tomorrow night.
The 28-year-old midfielder received a heavy whack during Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Plymouth Argyle and the joint swelled up like a balloon over the weekend.
It had subsided somewhat as he reported for a gym-based training session with the rest of the squad yesterday morning, but he was only able to do some gentle exercises in the pool.
He said: "I'm not quite sure how it happened but it looks pretty black and blue at the moment. I can walk okay but obviously it's going to take punishment every time I try and kick a ball.
"I don't want to rule myself in or out at this stage but I'd have to say it feels touch and go at the moment. It's the last thing I want because I feel that I've missed more than enough matches already this season, both through suspension and the wrist injury.
"Everyone was disappointed that our unbeaten run came to an end on Saturday but all the lads are now focused on trying to bounce back against Grimsby tomorrow. I really want to be a part of that.
"I won't train this morning, I'll speak to Dick Mackey the physio and see where we go from there. I really want to play and I'm sure the fitness test will be left as late as possible."
With Stefani Miglioranzi having been struggling of late and Steve Robinson almost certainly out for the rest of the campaign, Igoe's possible absence would limit manager Andy King's midfield options.
However, Igoe, while anxious to play, also knows that trying to play when not fully fit could have disastrous consequences for the rest of the campaign.
He said: "Having come this far you want to see it through to the end. Missing one match is bad enough but you don't want to be out for even longer."
One thing the midfielder is sure about is his state of mind and focus for the remainder of the campaign.
He will shortly face an FA hearing to answer the charge of bringing the game into disrepute, brought about after comments made following Town's 2-2 draw at Blackpool in January.
While others have had plenty to say on the issue, Igoe has promised supporters that it will not distract him in the meantime.
He said: "I'm just focused on the next three points and then the next three points after that.
"We'll deal with the other situation when we have to. But it won't affect my game in any way."
One thing that has changed since Town's unbeaten run came to an end is the midfielder's hair.
He said: "As I mentioned yesterday, the red streak has gone and I've decided to shave my hair off for the new cut.
"How long it stays that way might depend on what sort of run we put together from this point."
The club confirmed yesterday that the Town End is a complete sell-out for the visit of Bristol City on Easter Saturday.
Ticket office manager Stuart Pike said: "It's the first time it has sold out in advance during in my time here.
"The middle of the Nationwide Stand is also sold out and there aren't too many tickets left in the same area in the Arkells Stand.
"I don't think I'd be too far wrong in looking at a crowd of 14,000."
