MARY Ratcliffe in her thought-provoking letter expresses concern that the BNP could obtain a foothold in Swindon (EA Mar 9).

The question arises why has this become a possibility?

Mary has given us the answer "promises must become a reality".

The criminal failure of HM Government to prevent uncontrolled immigration to this small overcrowded island has created racial tension in our towns and cities.

Promises given ad nauseum by Government that increases in council tax will be limited to low single figures are awaiting confirmation by the exploited payees. Participation in the great adventure against the wishes of the electorate has proved to be an unmitigated disaster.

The genuine fears expressed by your correspondent will most certainly become reality unless our feeble politicians return to basics.

Government of the people by the people and for the people.
