GAZETTE & HERALD: Controversial plans to build flats on a former car park in New Road, Chippenham, are likely to get the go-ahead, despite objections from councillors.
Jephson Housing Association has submitted a full planning application for ten flats with parking on the site.
District councillor Ross Henning, lead member for the built environment, who fought against the development, said: "Thank god they are having parking spaces. It's just a pity they have not got as many spaces as we have lost."
Wiltshire County Council bought the site in the 1960s as part of a road improvement scheme, but until the end of 2003 it was used as an unofficial car park.
In November 2001 the district council refused an outline application for homes on the site because it was thought likely to cause extra traffic and reduce parking.
This was later overturned at an appeal lodged by the county council.
The car park was used regularly by residents in Park Lane, who have no designated parking, and staff from businesses in New Road.
A full planning application has now been submitted and because outline permission has already been granted the district council will be forced to accept it if it meets guidelines.
