GOAL poacher Charlie Griffin admitted he twice thought he was going to earn Chippenham a point on Saturday but in the end was left rueing what might have been.
Griffin, 24, who has 17 goals to his name this season, went close with a shot and then a header in the final ten minutes against Crawley.
But neither effort resulted in a goal and instead the striker is now setting his sights on gunning down Dover this weekend. "The result was disappointing because we had been on a bit of a run but have now come unstuck and lost," said Griffin.
"In patches we did okay and it was a case of missed chances really. We had a couple in the first half and I think we might have got a penalty on the second one.
"We had a few chances but for their goal we switched off really and their lad was right on the goal-line and he scored. Otherwise they never really attacked us that much."
Griffin said he had been certain he was going to register goals with both of his late efforts. "At the end I had a couple of chances. With my left-foot shot I'd seen the gap there and I thought 'this will go in' but the keeper has just stuck out his foot and kicked it away," he added.
"With the header I thought it was right in the middle of the goal and I thought 'that will be lovely' but I must have lost my bearings a bit and it went wide."
Crawley fielded a big, strong team including a number of players towering above six feet tall. But Griffin felt the Chippenham strikers had given their burly opponents a good run for their money.
"We were saying before the game that they had a few big lads at the back like Karl Ready who put themselves about," he said. "But we won a few fouls off them and got around them in the first half coming down the slope and I thought we did well against them.
"In the end it is disappointing but we have got to pick ourselves up for Dover next week.
"Crawley are the leaders but we are disappointed to lose to them. We've now got to get going for Saturday because that's three points at home that we should take.
"It was disappointing that we didn't get anything from the Crawley game but hopefully we can do well this weekend."
