SCREWFIX FIRST DIVISION: CORSHAM continued their fine season with a solid away win at Clevedon despite putting in a below par performance.

Alan Griffin struck inside the first ten minutes to get the visitors off to a flier but they failed to build on the goal and their play became disjointed.

Clevedon pushed on in search of an equaliser but Corsham's defence held firm and Griffin sealed the win with his second of the match in the dying minutes.

Corsham boss Colin Bush said: "We got off to a great start with Alan Griffin scoring but the team needed to go on a little bit.

"We were a bit disjointed because we had a few players out but our side was still good enough to do the job.

"We needed to get the game by the scruff of the neck after our goal but we took our foot off the gas and they came back into it.

"They had a few chances but we defended well before Alan got the second near the end."

Corsham had to make adjustments to the team because Ben Highmore was out with food poisoning, Scott Lye was playing for the county and John Woods failed a late fitness test before game.

But despite the reshuffle it was the visitors who went in front early on when Dan Beck played Griffin through and he produced a thunderous finish with the goalkeeper left rooted to the spot.

Corsham struggled to build on the goal though and it was Clevedon who worked their way back into the game.

Russell Lodge had to defend a dangerous ball across the face of goal and had a lucky escape when his attempted clearance struck a post.

Bush attempted to gee his players up at half-time and they improved in the second half.

Clevedon still battled hard as they looked for an equaliser and Geo Sperti was forced to hook the ball off the goal-line for Corsham.

But the visitors looked dangerous on the break and could have gone further in front before Griffin got his second.

Griffin himself was unlucky midway through the second half when he went on a good run and substitute Steve Roddy almost found the net as well. Ryan Bush then picked out Dave Kilmurray with a pass but he failed to slot the ball home.

The second goal eventually arrived in the final few minutes when Griffin burst through the middle and beat the goalkeeper.

Bush added: "We had worked hard in previous games so it was have been a disaster to come unstuck against Clevedon after those performances.

"We were a just a bit disjointed with changes but on reflection getting a 2-0 away win without playing particularly well is no bad thing."

Corsham are without a fixture on Saturday and are next in action on Tuesday when they take on Shrewton United in the semi-finals of the Wiltshire Senior Cup.

The match is being played at Devizes Town's Nursteed Road ground. Kick-off is at 7.30pm.
