COUNCILLORS in Marlborough are telling Kennet that there is no satisfactory site within the town for a recycling centre.

They said a proposed site in Salisbury Road would cause annoyance to neighbouring homes and add to existing traffic problems.

The town council has entered a formal objection to the proposal in the Wiltshire Waste Plan a recycling blueprint for the whole of the county that a household recycling centre could be set up at the council depot on the former station site.

The decisions of the waste local plan inspector are due to be published during the spring.

Brad Fleet, Kennet's director of community services, wrote to the town council asking if its members could suggest any alternative sites within the town.

Mr Fleet said a Marlborough representative of Friends of the Earth had expressed concern over the lack of progress in the provision of a recycling centre for the Marlborough area.

On Monday Coun David Parker told the town council that objections to the Salisbury Road council depot site had come from the 30 homes in neighbouring Priorsfield that would be affected.

Coun Parker said he was concerned that a household recycling centre would not be just for Marlborough but for the entire area.

He said the combined population of the large villages that would use the centre, including Aldbourne, Ramsbury, Great Bedwyn and Burbage, would equal that of Marlborough.

Coun Cossey said a site further out of town in Salisbury Road, opposite the proposed business park, where there is already a pumping station, could be considered.

The town council agreed to respond to Kennet saying there was no suitable area within the town boundary for a household recycling centre.
