YOUTH RUGBY: ADAM Young's try at the end of the first half against Cooper Avon Tyres created history for Calne.

The U14 star crashed over the line for Calne RFC's junior section's first ever score and helped spur his team-mates to a valiant second half display against an impressive Cooper Avon Tyres side.

CAT were on a roll after winning 50-0 at Swindon the previous week and the Calne officials had been worried about the prospect of a demoralising whitewash.

But these thoughts were soon dismissed as Calne's pack, in their first scrum, bullied CAT off their own scrumage ball.

Thanks to impressive individual displays by Shane McCafferty, whose tackling and dominance of the ruck combined with the explosive running of Andy Pitchley, Calne stayed within touching distance of their peers for most of the game.

Calne were chasing the game from the offset as the experienced CAT side picked up an early score converted from the sideline followed by another try andconversion for a half time lead of 14-5.

A rejuvenated Calne got the second half off to a good start with a sustained period of pressure in the CAT half.

Unfortunately a few infringements and penalties saw CAT back on the offensive and pick up another try.

Undeterred Calne disrupted CAT ball and Andy Pitchley picked up the fumble to run the length of the field for a stunning score that Courtney Earl converted.

Calne tired towards the end and Cooper-Avon finished the stronger with another try to seal a 36-12 win.

Nevertheless, Calne left the field jubilant and full of anticipation for their next fixture, which will most likely be against Swindon.

The game was by watched club captain Taff Morgan who 20 years ago ran a Colts team at the club. That team came though as a unit and became the all-conquering team in the 2000/01 and 2001/02 seasons.

U14s coach Alan Matthews said: "I was impressed with the team and we will now work on some of the more technical aspects of the game."

The U14s side are still looking for a kit sponsor. Anyone interested call Alan Matthews on (07717) 842807 or email matmob@btopenworld.com
