Leftover funds of £4,000 from a Bradford on Avon club which shut seven years ago has been donated to charity.

The Liberal Club, based in the Working Men's Club opposite Westbury House, closed after it failed to attract new members and investment.

Trustees of the club have been waiting to see if any claims to the remaining funds came in before splitting the money between four charities.

Cheques have been given to Bradford St John Ambulance, the British Kidney Association, Bradford Hospital League of Friends and Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

Trustee John Keating said: "It was a shame the club shut but we are pleased to be able to give the money away after all this time to good causes.

"We had around 150 members and tried a scheme to get extra members to keep us afloat but it didn't work."

Representatives from the four charities collected their cheques at a presentation outside HSBC bank, Church Street, on Wednesday.

Liberal Club secretary Colin Carter said: "It was a great club with a skittle alley upstairs and we used to organise plenty of entertainment for the members but we could not afford to do that towards the end.

"We have had to wait before we handed out this money in case there were any claims to it but it is a relief to have distributed the last of the money."
