Ref. 14870/1RESIDENTS in Winsley proved a bit backwards in coming forwards when not a single person from the village attended a special Lions Club open day on Saturday.

Despite a leaflet campaign by Bradford on Avon Lions Club publicising the event at St Nicholas Hall they failed to recruit any new members from the village.

Now Lions president Ken Giles is planning a new way to bring in members and hopes Winsley residents will get on board.

He said: "It was disappointing about Winsley. We were busy all day at the event but it was all Bradford people who came along.

"We're not going to give up so if people won't come to us we must go to them and we've decided we'll be at the village fetes in the summer to publicise the club and hopefully get new members that way."

Lions Club members presented a cheque for £1,000 to Peter Cross, chairman of Winsley Cricket Club, at Saturday's open day, to help fund restoration of the cricket pavilion after it was gutted by fire last year.

The club also ran a first aid training session with help from Bradford St John Ambulance.

Nine people took part in Saturday's first aid course, only one was from Winsley and already a member.

Mr Giles said: "We have plenty of members but need more younger ones to bring on the club. The ones we are trying to catch are people retiring earlier and we hope that trend continues because it means people have more spare time for groups like ours.

"We have always been a quieter sort of group in the past but if we've got to go out there and blow our own trumpet to get new members we will."
