Ref. 29571-37NIKKI Woolmore is leading a new group of scientists keen to prove that the laboratory can be cool.

The 25-year-old from Covingham is studying for a PhD in ballistics and works at Cranford University Defence Academy, in Shrivenham, where she tests tank armour.

Now she is one of 13 scientists taking part in Noise New Outlooks In Science And Engineering who aim to encourage people to develop an interest in science.

As part of National Science Week, which runs until Sunday, the Noise group, sponsored by Swindon's Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, is spreading the good word.

Nikki said: "Noise has been a interesting experience. Because EPSRC has helped to fund my course they want something in return so they asked us to speak to youngsters in schools and attract them into a career in science."

Despite helping to develop weapons, she is against any form of war or conflict.

She said: "I try not to think that I am helping to develop a weapon, it is more about trying to save lives.

"A world without wars is never going to happen so, if we are going to send in our soldiers it is best that they have the best equipment and protection because that's what the other side will try to have. So I think it is more about saving the lives of those people."
