BRIAN Austen started working in the big top aged 15 and he now runs three circuses of his own.
And one of them is coming to Swindon next week.
Mr Austen, 57, from Oaksey, has jointly run the European Entertainment Corporation for nine years, which is responsible for The Moscow State Circus, The Chinese State Circus and the Cottle and Austen Circus.
Last September he bought out the shares held by his friend and associate of 33 years, Gerry Cottle, and is now the sole shareholder of EEC.
The company employs more than 300 people and has an annual turnover of £10 million which isn't bad going for a man who started out as a high-wire walker.
He said: "I don't miss the high wire I did it for 21 years. There is money to be made in the big top, but it takes a lot of effort."
In 1980 he fell back down to earth and became a lion trainer.
This lasted for five years until Mr Austen started taking charge of logistics.
As managing director, he now flies all over the world looking for new acts.
The circus winter quarters have been based in Chelworth Industrial Estate, Cricklade, since 1972.
Mr Austen said: "It's an exciting business and I oversee the lighting, choreography and act bookings."
The Cottle and Austen Circus arrives in town on Wednesday, in Moredon Bridge.
Tickets cost between £7 and £25. For bookings call 07030 170170.
