Swindon Primary Care Trust has welcomed the price increase on a packet of cigarettes following this week's budget.
Chancellor Gordon Brown revealed a packet of 20 cigarettes would cost smokers an extra 8p.
Jane Leaman, PCT director of public health, said: "I welcome the increase of taxation on cigarettes as it may prompt people to quit.
"However this is often a tall order. Therefore the Swindon PCT Smoke Free Advice Service is on hand to support people to stop."
But the anti-smoking charity ASH described the inflation-linked duty rise on cigarettes as a missed opportunity.
Director Deborah Arnott said: "This is disappointing. The Chancellor has missed a golden opportunity to boost the Government's strategy to cut smoking rates and improve the nation's health. Such a small increase in tax is unlikely to provide the incentive smokers need to help them to quit.
"Sadly, this means more needless, totally preventable heart disease and cancer cases and thousands of premature deaths."
