IMPROVING disabled access to public buildings will be one of the aims of a new network set up to represent disabled people in the Swindon area.

The South West Disability Equality Network is the first body for the regional representation of disabled people.

It plans to ensure the views of disabled people are listened to.

It will also be seeking to help service providers comply with a new access law to come into effect from October.

The law, part of the Disability Discrimination Act, will require everyone providing a service, from shop owners to pub landlords, to make reasonable adjustments to address physical features which may be causing problems for disabled people.

Network chairwoman Carolynne Beadman said: "We have a lot of hard work in front of us but it's going to be challenging and great fun."
