Ref. 29653-72SAMMY IGOE is uncertain whether he will ever grace Town's new home but he is hell bent on giving the club every chance of filling it to capacity.
First Division football in state of the art surroundings is a powerful attraction for both supporters and quality players and Igoe is determined to deliver just that for the Town fans of tomorrow.
A section of the County Ground faithful has expressed support for a Madejski-style arena in Swindon.
As one of three former Reading players on Town's books, Igoe knows there is great potential to enjoy a repeat success story along the M4.
He said: "If this club can make it into the First Division, hopefully well before the new stadium is built, there's no reason why it shouldn't fill it.
"Let's hope the County Ground sees a couple of Division One seasons first though, starting from next year.
"But if Swindon Town are to progress in the future, then a new stadium has to be the way to go.
"The County Ground no doubt holds a lot of happy memories for people but I think you really have to move with the times.
"There was a terrific atmosphere when we had lots of Reading fans inside the Madejski and that's what everyone would love to see at the new ground."
Whatever the timescale for a new stadium, Igoe believes Town have armed their manager with a wonderful marketing tool in the battle to attract quality players to the club.
He said: "If the manager is dealing with a player who is maybe a bit undecided as to whether to join Swindon Town, this won't half make a difference.
"It will definitely help and once the stadium is built, I'm sure a quick look around will help convince a player make up his mind."
With Andy King absent, assistant boss Malcolm Crosby put Igoe and his colleagues through their paces at Wanborough yesterday.
There was mixed news to report on the injury front.
Crosby said: "Andy Gurney hasn't trained because of an ear infection while Tommy Mooney has a sore back. He should be okay for Saturday though."
Midfielder Stefani Miglioranzi took part in the whole session however, to Crosby's delight.
He said: "Stef is coming along nicely and I think he'd be back in contention to face Barnsley.
"Sometimes players do come back into the team early when you've got a small squad.
"That's probably why we could do with a couple of new additions to strengthen the squad."
