THE Government is being urged by North Wiltshire MP James Gray to stand up to the EU in a row over the export of live horses for slaughter.
Animal lovers fear new draft EU regulations could allow the resumption of live exports for the first time since Britain banned them in 1937. Campaigners claim such exports would be distressing for the animals.
Conservative Mr Gray, who is Shadow Minister for Rural Affairs, said: "This practice has been banned for the last 70 years with good reason. I am certain that most people hate the idea of exporting our horses to be made into sausages and salami.
"My Conservative colleagues in the European Parliament are working hard to persuade the parliament to allow Britain an opt-out clause."
But Mr Gray claims the Government is reluctant to fight on the issue.
