I must comment on K Jones' letter regarding the proposed resident parking review.
I note he/she lives in the Lawns. Here, his house would probably have a driveway as well as a garage so he has no problem parking at night time.
As a former resident of Eastcott, I know only too well the problems that face those living in terraced houses. Eastcott and central are the worst areas for parking, mainly because there are no back ways to build garages, neither are the front gardens big enough to lay hard standing.
Having been chairman of SCARP residents' parking group for five years and an Eastcott councillor for nine years I know the system used by the council. More spaces could be found if business permits were withdrawn in Victoria and Commercial roads. Both areas have car parks close by and the difference between the annual business permit compared to that in a car park is very small. Short term parking bays should be reviewed, as many of these no longer serve business premises.
The proposed idea of issuing visitors' permits to a household rather than to a resident would not create more spaces, in some cases it could mean hardship. The best solution is to allow residents to park in the borough car parks at night. I hope officers and members will really look sympathetically at this suggestion.
We know the car will not go away and changes must be made to prevent illegal parking on double yellow lines, allowing residents to park in car parks at a time when they are little used.
