LOCAL councillors have called on Wiltshire County Council to change its mind and undertake a traffic assessment of Devizes.
The county council has refused to carry out a survey into how hundreds of new homes planned to be built in Devizes would affect traffic in the town, particularly in London Road.
The county council has refused to do the survey on the grounds of cost.
Local parish, town, district and county councillors who met at a meeting of Devizes Community Area Forum on Monday night decided to lobby the county council to get the traffic survey done.
Roundway Parish Council chairman Viv Alexander said: "London Road is busy now in the mornings and evenings.
"How will it cope with extra traffic when homes are built next to Quakers Walk and possibly on the Kverneland site?"
Brad Fleet, Kennet District Council's director of community services, said: "The Inspector who conducted the public inquiry into the replacement Kennet Local Plan concluded that the traffic capacity would be strained but would not be an unacceptable increase."
Maurice Came, chairman of governors at Devizes School, said: "The county council has the responsibility to manage the traffic in Devizes."
