VICE-chancellor Glynis Breakwell still insists that only Coate is suitable for Bath University. It's Coate or nothing.
I find such arrogance astounding. There is no sense of partnership and democratic negotiation.
She obviously feels that Swindon is so desperate for a university that she can call the shots.
And even then, the town would be nothing more than an overspill site for someone else's university. That would be demeaning to a town twice the size of Bath. The logo carries the name of Bath three times larger than the name of Swindon!
It is claimed that a university would be the most important development since Brunel brought the Great Western Railway to Swindon. There is no comparison. The borough was created by the railway, but Bath University only wants Coate for its own advantage.
Has the economic potential been quantified? The campus would be self-contained and isolated. And few students would have the cash to spend in the town.
For a change, I would like to see the council calling the shots and putting the pride and dignity of Swindon first and foremost.
If Bath won't compromise, change the logo to Bath and Swindon and consider other sites, then I suggest they go elsewhere. Swindon won't fall apart.
