ONCE again we are getting the usual excuses from our local councils blaming the Government for the exorbitant rises in council tax.

This causes me to question the point of having local councils if they have no power to control their own finances, let central Government pay for all the services we get from local government and operate through local offices.

Council tax has doubled in real terms in the last ten years. Would any Government survive income tax at 44 per cent and VAT at 35 per cent?

May I suggest that in the coming local elections council tax payers protest by not voting for any sitting councillor. This will not make a lot of difference because in this undemocratic system of local government those who pay the bills are in a minority but it would sharpen the minds of our councillors and hopefully make them fight harder for the necessary central Government funds.
