On Wednesday next week Wiltshire county councillors meet to decide which roads in the county need to have their speed limits reviewed.

They will have a long list of roads to consider and their task is not an easy one. But somewhere in their pile of papers will be the case of Spin Hill, Market Lavington, and in the name of justice it is surely time that the speed limit on this dangerous road was reduced.

Just under a year ago, Sharon Oliver died on that road when a car approaching hers lost control. An expert witness appearing for the driver of the car stated in court that it was travelling at 33mph. The speed limit on Spin Hill is 60mph.

It is a residential road where many children live, and there is no pavement on the blind bend leading to the village.

Over 200 people in Market Lavington have signed a petition calling for the limit to be reduced to 30 miles per hour.

In the past, Spin Hill residents have called for something to be done about the dangerous road they live on, only to be told that priority was given to sites where fatal accidents had occurred. It is very sad to think that it may have taken the death of Mrs Oliver to bring about a change in the speed limit. It would be unacceptable for her family, and for the community, if we were to fail once again.

Sharon Oliver had a family who loved her dearly and a wide circle of friends. Hundreds of people came to her funeral. She was by all accounts a wonderful, caring person who was an asset to her community. We cannot undo her untimely death, but we can make the road where she died safer, and try to make sure this never happens again.
