Ref. 29656-11Name: Dave Smith, Age: 40-plus
So what do you actually do?
As the joint owner of Woods, my role is to ensure the customer base we have built up at Woods Coffee Shop in Wood Street continues to enjoy what our team has created in Swindon.
What do you hate most about your job and why?
I hate it when major suppliers of certain vegetables offer sub-standard produce to the general public.
Do you think your colleagues like you?
As long as they cut the mustard in the coffee shop, I am not to bothered about whether they like me or not.
What's the best bit of advice you have ever been given?
My father, who passed away when I was just eleven years old, said: "Always make sure your hair is Brylcreemed and your shoes are polished." He also said: "When you get a bit older, always check your collar for lipstick before you go home." I have always missed him.
What's the best bit of gossip you have heard about yourself?
I was once told that in a previous career, a work colleague had described me as a medallion man. When I inquired who had make the comment, it turned out to be a chap with his front tooth missing, greased-down hair and shirt unbuttoned to the waist!
What job did you want to do when you were young and why?
A deckchair attendant on Bournemouth beach because they pulled all the best looking girls.
If you could have a dream job what would it be?
A deckchair attendant on Malibu beach. I might not pull the girls but the weather is better and the tips are bigger. Who says you don't progress with age?
Hobbies: Birdwatching, particularly on sandy beaches, sandcastle building and deckchair erection.
In job terms who or what has been your greatest influence and why?
My first ever purchasing manager, Mr John Pollard, who introduced me to fine wines, great restaurants, food and travel, which is where the interest in beaches came in.
Thank-you, John.
