Ref. 29694-46SUSIE the German shepherd dog stepped into the breach and saved Beechcroft Infants School from serious flooding.
Susie, who lives with her owner, school caretaker Dave Stratton, on the school site in Beechcroft Road, Upper Stratton, was awoken by banging coming from the boiler room at around midnight on Wednesday.
Mr Bailey, 35, went to investigate and found the hall flooded with an inch of water.
He called the Local Education Authority emergency number and arranged for a plumber to fix it.
A radiator pipe in the hall had fractured, causing water from the heating system to spill out. Besides covering the hall floor, the water had also spread into the school office, soaking the carpets.
It became apparent there was too much water for the plumber to pump away, so the fire brigade was called in.
Around 90 of the school's 264 pupils had yesterday off because the heating in their classrooms was not working. Lessons returned to normal today.
