SCIENCE facilities at a Trowbridge secondary school have been bolstered with the opening of a purpose-built laboratory.
The new LEA-funded building, named the Franklin laboratory, was unveiled at the John of Gaunt School last Wednesday by acting headteacher Lyn Sharpe.
It is hoped the lab can be upgraded into an interactive unit when the school is awarded its specialist status funding in September.
Deputy headteacher Roger Gilbert said the school would receive £150,000 towards refurbishing school buildings, in addition to a fixed sum over the next four years, for specialising in science, maths and computing.
"We hope the money will help us upgrade resources in the lab with data projection and interactive whiteboards," he said.
"With the £150,000 capital we are working with architects to draw up refurbishment plans."
The four-year fixed sum of money will have to be split 60 per cent towards plans drawn up for the school, and 40 per cent on plans geared at involving the community.
Mr Gilbert said: "One of our aims is to make John of Gaunt a true community school."
