PUPILS from Haydon Wick Primary School stopped, looked and listened to help them take first prize in a junior road safety quiz.
Eighteen schools took part in this week's final, when teams of Year Six pupils were tested on their knowledge of the Highway Code and other road safety facts. Naming the sequence of traffic lights and deciding who had the right of way at a junction were among the conundrums facing the children this year.
Haydon Wick's winning team were Daniella Hyner Anderson, Shannon Hilton and Mica Hornbuckle, and yesterday they claimed their trophy from Swindon Council's road safety officer Margaret Tester.
Their efforts also won them and about 40 of their classmates a tour of Swindon Town FC next month.
"The children really did swot up on road safety and it gets more difficult every year to set the questions," said Mrs Tester, who said the event was an attempt to raise awareness of road safety for the parents watching the event as well as the competitors.
The final, which took place on Monday evening at Ellendune Community Centre in Wroughton, saw St Catherine's Catholic Primary School take second place and Lainesmead Primary third.
