Speeding motorists in Wiltshire are to be given special access to a new website allowing them to view evidence of their driving offences.

The system the first of its kind in the UK is launched by Wiltshire and Swindon Safety Camera Partnership and will also inform people why speed cameras are located in certain areas, giving statistics on accidents on those roads.

The scheme also complies with the forthcoming Freedom of Information Act 2005.

David Frampton, manager for the Safety Camera Unit, said: "The new Act means that we will need to provide the public with much more information in relation to speeding offences. The portal will not only make it much easier for us to meet our obligations under the Act, but also address some of the high profile concerns the public has about speed enforcement.

"People will be able to log on to a website that will give them immediate access to evidence relating to an alleged speeding offence and information about the collisions in the local area which should help them understand why speed cameras have been placed in certain locations."

When motorists receive a penalty notice they will also receive a private pin number, which will give them access to their information online.

Mr Frampton added: "Once motorists know the statistics and understand how many crashes occur on each road they might be more willing to slow down and create a safer driving environment."
