The fire-damaged bedroom at the Detain family home in Roman Road, SalisburyA BRAVE Salisbury teenager helped save the lives of her entire family after staying up late to finish her homework.
Teresa Detain (17) had been working on the computer at the family home in Roman Road, when she walked into her ground-floor bedroom at about 1am on Monday to find a fire had broken out right next to where her sister Hannah was sleeping.
After pulling Hannah (12) to safety, Teresa screamed out to her parents, who had already been woken by the sound of the hallway smoke alarm going off.
The family of seven, who have lived in the house for four years, managed to escape from their three-storey home unscathed - father John (46) putting the flames out before fire crews arrived just after 1.15am.
Daughter Hannah was taken by ambulance to Salisbury District Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation but was later released.
Speaking at the family home, Mr Detain said: "This happened in the very early hours of the morning, so we all had a very lucky escape.
"We have at least five or six smoke detectors in the house but it was very scary to see. If this will help encourage people to get smoke detectors fitted, then that's great."
A spokesman for Wiltshire fire brigade praised the family for having a smoke alarm.
He said: "We always try to encourage people to use smoke alarms and get the message across that they do save lives."
Damage to the ground-floor bedroom remained minimal, although the cause of the fire is not yet known.
