GAZETTE & HERALD: YOUNGSTERS at Frogwell Primary School in Chippenham put their thinking caps on to examine the science of sweets in a special activity morning.

The 60 Year 5 pupils had a mouthwatering experience when they explored the longevity of different sorts of sweets.

Popular confections such as Haribo's, M&Ms and Maltesers were variously dissolved in water and melted in the mouth to test how long each variety lasted.

It was the kind of science guaranteed to keep their attention, according to deputy head and year 5 teacher Kathryn Nicholas.

"They got to eat sweets of course they liked it!" she said.

The practical sweet investigation was followed by the drawing of graphs, and a discussion about the results and the methods of working.

The pupils came up with lots of interesting ideas and made some astute observations, under the guidance of Mrs Nicholas and fellow year 5 teacher Karen Hughes.

The sour Haribos were found to the longest lasting sweet but pupils realised some were much bigger than others, so they would take longer to disappear. And M&Ms, when dissolved in water, left a tiny central core suggesting they did not altogether dissolve.

"They came up with lots of different conclusions," said Mrs Nicholas.
