THERE was something old, something borrowed, something blue and something a bit unusual going on at Sherston Church on Tuesday.

In a full wedding ceremony, five-year-old bride Hannah in a flowing purple dress and four-year-old Tom walked down the aisle and tied the knot as part of their school studies.

Driven to the church in a chauffeur-driven limousine, the happy couple were welcomed by the strains of the church organ and exchanged vows and rings in the service conducted by Sherston vicar the Rev Malcolm Ross.

The bride's mother Jenny Clegg said her daughter looked beautiful.

She said: "It might be difficult explaining in later life that my daughter is already married.

"Hannah is quite a shy girl but this experience had really boosted her confidence."

The groom was apparently too tired to comment after the ceremony but dad Angus Maclaren said: "He was upset that he had lost the ring in the garden at home."

A reception was held yesterday at Sherston Primary School with bubbly (lemonade) and two heart shaped cakes.

Children from classes one and two watched the ceremony from the pews as part of their project for the SAT tests. There were also 10 bridesmaids.

School governor Tristram Lewis said: "It was just very nice, heart-warming and really sweet. The whole thing was part and parcel of project in reception year to look at life in general, relationships between people and how families work."

Eleven girls came forward wanting to be selected as the bride. Teacher Debby Liddle decided to draw lots and Hannah was the lucky winner.

Being the gentleman he is Tom even went down on bended knee to propose to his bride-to-be.

There were more than a few curious glances from passers-by as the 'newlywed' couple left the church to a peel of the bells.
