MORGAN'S Vale and Woodfalls Primary School is one of only a handful of primary schools in Wiltshire to achieve a grade two following the latest Ofsted report.

Headteacher Sue Larkin said that, six years ago, the school was judged as providing good value for money, and this time, despite more stringent Ofsted criteria, the inspectors had actually "upped our grade".

Mrs Larkin said she felt great pride in the Ofsted report, because being described as a school that gives "very good value for money" was an outstanding achievement.

The school has 104 pupils on its roll and Ofsted inspectors reported that pupils had a good attitude to learning, were of good behaviour and had high levels of respect for one another.

The report praised the above-average standards in English, mathematics and science and commented that both teaching and learning overall were very good.

The report said: "The key issues identified in the inspection, which took place in 1998, have been addressed very well.

"National and local initiatives have been implemented effectively.

"The school's commitment to raising standards has been unwavering and, as a result, the school's self-evaluation strategies are very robust."

The report noted that pupils achieve well from Year 1 to Year 6 and standards at Year 2 in 2003 were at the national average in English and above in mathematics.

"Over the last four years, standards have followed this pattern ... standards in all other subjects are at or slightly above expected levels," it said.

The report said the school should maintain its effort to improve standards.
