Single mother-of-five Shirley McCafferty has won a brand new car from a packet of crisps even though she cannot drive.

Ms McCafferty, 40, from Calne, also went to London for the first time where she met the star of the latest Walkers advertisement, Terry Venables.

When her 15-year-old son Shane told her about the prize she refused to believe him. Shane rushed into the shop where she works and said he had won a Ford Focus from a packet of crisps.

"I shooed him out and told him to go back home and said I'd see him later. I just laughed at him," said Ms McCafferty.

When she finally arrived home she found her 19-year-old daughter Samantha clutching the winning voucher that had been hidden in a packet of Walkers crisps.

"She had held it in her hand for four hours waiting for me to arrive. She was so scared of losing it."

"I had bought a multi pack of crisps from the shop where I work and Shane took one and found the blue voucher inside and opened it up to discover that our luck had finally changed. The family were so excited. I've never won anything before."

Ms McCafferty, who moved from Co Antrim in Northern Ireland to Calne a few years ago, had moved house the day of her win. She added: "This is just a complete change in fortune and something which will really help."

"I think it's all a dream, going to London, getting the car and meeting Terry, going for a nice lunch in Covent Garden it's fantastic."

She has not yet decided what to do with the car, as she has not passed the driving test, although she has had lessons.

"I think I'll just look at the car for a few days to get used to it and then decide," she said.
